Explicit music is always labeled, no matter where you stream it from. Why aren’t independent songs, albums, and artists highlighted in such a way? That’s the question behind Record Union’s lates push for the Independent Tag.
Led by CEO Johan Svanberg, Record Union wants the same for independent labels and musicians: a tag, just like the one that usually says “Explicit” – but instead it will say “Independent.” They also suggest the ability to click the label, enabling a user to search by independence or find other similar, indie songs.
“Unless the big streaming services start to take this seriously and create better terms for independent music creators we believe that it could have negative effects on the diversity of music,” says Svanberg.
Launched on Nov. 27, the petition urges Apple, Amazon, Spotify, and YouTube to add the feature to their platforms. More than 650 people have signed.
